SCREENING FOR CANCER

When individuals are screened for cancer, they are checked for conditions that may potentially lead to cancer. Generally they are people with no real symptoms. Cancer screening helps in detecting the problem and administers treatment earlier. Early diagnosis of the disease makes it easier to cure it. As cancer begins to spread it becomes harder to treat. Cancer deaths are significantly reduced with screening tests.

At Guru Hospitals there are different kinds of screening tests.

General screening:

Physical examination and medical history: A general physical examination is done to check for signs of any disease like lumps etc. The patient’s health history, habits, medications taken in the past and current prescription of medications are noted. Any past illnesses and treatments are also recorded.

Laboratory tests: Samples of tissue, blood, urine and other bodily substances are collected to be tested in a laboratory environment.

Genetic testing: Genetic testing looks for gene mutations or changes that can lead to certain types of cancer that are inherent.

Specific screening:

Mammography and breast MRI: These are very popular tests done for the screening of breast cancer. It is mostly carried out in women between the ages of 40 and 75 years. The breast MRI is done to check for harmful mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

HPV or human papillomavirus testing: HVP and pap tests are done to reduce incidences of cervical cancer.

Colonoscopy: Sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy and FOBTs are done for the detection of colorectal cancer. Abnormal growths of polyps that may potentially develop into cancer are removed.

Low-dose helical computed tomography: Lung cancers can be detected with the low-dose helical CT. This test is usually carried out in heavy smokers between the ages of 50 and 75 years.

Alpha-fetoprotein test: LThe alpha-fetoprotein test is a blood examination done along with the ultrasound of the liver to test for liver cancer.
